How a cone Christmas tree is built
A cone Christmas tree is a three-dimensional frame clad in artificial needles, lit in two layers. String lights run through the needles to light the whole shape, either steady or twinkling, while LED rope light picks out a pattern across the surface — bands and stars.
A third layer comes from decorations hung in the foliage, baubles above all. These do most to set the character of the tree — the same shape can look classic or distinctly contemporary, depending on how it is dressed. What it does for a space
A large illuminated Christmas tree works differently from every other decoration in the season: the rest frames a space, while the tree gives it a centre. The Christmas market and the stage go up around it, people arrange to meet by it, and it is where they stop to take photographs.
The location therefore needs more thought than for any other decoration: there has to be enough distance to take in the whole silhouette, and clear ground around it. In a city, the tree usually stands on the market square or a roundabout; in a shopping centre, on the concourse or just outside the entrance.
Choosing the right tree
Scale matters most. The tree has to suit the sightlines the location gives you: one seen from across the market square needs a very different height and outline from one people walk past in a shopping-centre concourse.
With the scale settled, the next decision is how dense the pattern should be — from an even, understated glow to elaborate arrangements combining LED rope light with added decorations. Light colour is chosen in the same way: warm, cool or a mix, so that the tree sits comfortably with the rest of the illuminations.
Timing matters too. Our structures are built for repeated installation and removal, and a catalogue design is often only a starting point — we agree any change to the dimensions with you individually. Production for the season begins in spring, so it is worth booking early; a timer switch is included on request, at no extra cost.
What installing a cone Christmas tree requires
All components are rated for outdoor use and chosen to suit the design — IP67 LED rope light and IP66 quick connectors. How the tree is anchored and powered is settled at the design and visualisation stage, followed by transport, installation and removal, storage and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
How tall can a cone Christmas tree be, and how much room does its base need?
As standard we make cone Christmas trees from 4 m to 12 m tall, and the base diameter grows with the height: Ø 1.5 m at 4 m, up to Ø 3.6 m at 12 m. For heights in between we work from a table of practical heights and diameters rather than working them out ourselves, and we will confirm the figures for the particular shape you need.
What does the tree stand on?
Inside the tree there is a cross-shaped base, weighted down with concrete blocks or sand-filled bulk bags — a different approach from the lattice frames used under most figures. The ballast is usually supplied by the client, but our installation team can provide it if needed.
How many people are needed to put up a tree, and how long does it take?
Installation is carried out by at least two people, and it is worth allowing around 3 hours or more, depending on the height and configuration of the tree. From 6 m upwards a cherry picker or crane is needed; our own staff operate the machine, as they hold the relevant qualifications to do so.
How is the tree split into sections for transport?
The structure is built from 2 m rings, and on trees of 8 m and above the bottom ring splits further into a left and a right half. This keeps the tree easy to transport to site and easy to store between seasons.
Can the foliage be refreshed after a few seasons?
Yes. The foliage can be replaced as part of a refurbishment, so a tree that has stood for several seasons goes back out onto the square with a fresh layer of greenery. The structure itself is designed to be used season after season, and replacing the foliage is a separate job that we carry out when a decoration is refurbished.
Do the decorations need to be switched on manually?
No — they do not need to be switched on manually. On request, we fit a timer switch that turns the illuminations on and off at set times. Simply mention this in your enquiry, ideally with the hours during which the decorations should be lit.
How are the decorations built to withstand outdoor conditions?
The structures are built for outdoor use and designed to last for many seasons. On large batch orders, structural calculations for an individual item are carried out by an external engineering consultancy.
What happens if a decoration stops working during the season?
Our maintenance team takes the fault on: minor repairs are carried out on site, while larger faults mean the decoration comes back to our workshop. With your report, please include a photo of the damage or the symptom, the name and code of the decoration, and a short description — whether it does not light up at all, lights up only partially, or works erratically. Give us the location as well if we are to collect the decoration from the installation site.
